As part of our Science learning we have been investingating how the skeleton is an important part of our body. We have learned the names of some of the bones in our body and started to learn how our skeleton is different to that of an animal.
As part of our English learning we have been following the story of Shane, a homeless boy, in our class text - Way Home. In order to better understand what it might be like to live as he does we spent part of Wednesday morning outside in the cold wind trying to build shelters from cardboard. This was far more difficult than we expected and we learned some valuable lessons about what life must be life for children like Shane.
On Tuesday this week we learned more about Factors of numbers in Maths. This led into an investigation where we tried, as a whole class, to find the factors of every number up to 100!
This week we had great fun at our Family Fun Maths session. This gives our parents and carers chance to come into school and take part in some Maths games and investigations with us. The games were great fun and some of us were able to beat the adults in the room!
During Anti-Bullying week, Stefan from Bigfoot Arts came into school to run a RESPECT workshop with Years 5 & 6. During this session we worked on a performace showing how we should all behave towards one another. The activity was great and we learned an important word - EMPATHY.
As part of Anti-Bullying week we took part in a Mes Amis activity with our friends in Year 1. In the morning we learned a collection of new games and then in the afternoon we had to take on the role of teachers and show the younger children how to play them. This was not as easy as we expected! We definitely learned a lot about what it must be like for our teachers!
Sam from OXFAM came to visit the whole of Year Five on Monday 13th November. She talked to us all about the work OXFAM does around the world to help children receive the levels of care and education that they are entitled to. This fits in with our topic of Childrens Rights where we are learning about the Rights and Responsibilities every child has.
At the start of the term we produced and performed our first Family Assembly of Year Five! To begin with we were very nervous; after all, it was so close to the start of the year, what could we possibly have to talk about? But then we rememberd all the things we'd done already this year and suddenly it was easy! In fact, it was harder to decide what to leave out than did we have enough to talk about!
In Maths we had lots of fun playing a game where we used the multiplication skills we had been learning in order to move around the board.
In Science we have been making predictions and testing them as we learn about how our lungs work and why we need them.
In ICT we were learning about how information is kept safe online through the use of codes and ciphers.
In ICT we are currently learning about how a search engine works. This is to help with our overall project creating an E-Safety webpage.
In PE we have been learning all the skills required to play team games effectively. We have learned how working as part of a team is an important skill in life.
This term, we were very lucky to have a visit from the inspirational Jim Gump, who told us all about his commitment to being active every day, and many wonderful stories from his time spent outside, running in the UK and USA.
